The holiday season is fast approaching (I know, it could slow down a little),
and there are a few opportunities for the market to be open for holiday happenings.

Exciting news came today that our new produce vendor, Jimmy Thomas from Clover will be offering the very popular Indian River (Florida) produce,
starting this Saturday, November 21 at the market.
This includes freshly picked ruby red grapefruit, navel oranges, and tangerines.
They will be available in 5 lb. bags at approx $1 per lb.
Pre- orders can be made for bags as well as entire cases.

Back by popular demand...the tree lot will be returning to the market again this year. It was a huge success last year!
We will offer fresh cut, mountain grown trees. Bring the family to the lot
and enjoy a cup of cider and pick up a wreath too.
The tree lot is scheduled to open daily beginning Saturday, November 28.
Also, some of the regular market vendors have expressed the interest in being at the market
on Saturdays before the holidays offering gift and holiday decorating items. The market will be open from 9AM-Noon beginning No

The Moonlight Market will be open Saturday, December 12 from 5-8PM, in conjunction
with the "Christmas in Olde York" tour of holiday homes.
10 vendors participated in this event last year and it was such a success
that we have decided to make it an annual event.

The market has such huge potential and our wonderfully, charming community is the perfect backdrop for a thriving market. It's all about food and fun! York's first food theme festival will take place Sat, Sept 19 from 10AM-2PM at the farmers market, N Congress St.

The event will feature York restaurants and caterers who will be offering smaller size portions of choice items from their menus. It's an opportunity for them to showcase their culinary talents, menu, and services available to the community. And at the same time it will offer vistors the opportunity to sample from more than one vendor and get acquanted with area eateries and cateres, old and new.

The event will coincide with the regular weekly market and will feature live, local music too.

Peach Cobbler recipe ~ you can use half the sugar and it would still come out great. To make the Cinnamon Ice Cream just add ground cinnamon to taste to your favorite vanilla ice cream and stir in really good. What a great way to use the yummy peaches from the Market!

Thank you to the vendors and the community for your continued support of the Market. It is very refreshing to take a drive or walk to our beloved Downtown and see the bustle of activity on the lot. Signa, along with the Downtown Business Association, have alot of great ideas and events that will bring that "Home Town" feeling to our community. Any little thing we can do to support these projects is much appreciated and we will all reap the benefits!

a success!!! How exciting to see so many new vendors join us and to see our wonderful vendors from last season as well! We had gorgeous Spring weather and a very nice turnout of support from friends and neighbors. The Market will be here every Saturday from 8am to Noon we look forward to seeing you there as a vendor or supporter. We can all have a share in making this the best season ever!

The Market is a great way to make a few extra dollars by selling your fruits and vegetables from your own garden and also an excellent way to save money by shopping for homegrown produce, baked goods, and great handcrafted gifts. When we support our local growers and crafters we keep the dollars in our community and in turn that helps our families as well. It's a win, win for all who participate!

...and on the same token it takes a community to accept and support something new so it can succeed. I'm proud of the community of York, and personally delighted in knowing that this is exactly what evolved during the first season of the York Downtown Farmers Market!

While we say goodbye to 2008 and close the lot for the season, I can't help but reflect back over the past year and a half, starting with the planning stages in Aug 2007, then to all of the people that played a roll in it's success, no matter how small or significant. Without these people we could not have realized our goal. To start with, THANK YOU to Tommy and Phyllis Broom for "planting the seed" in suggesting I talk to Jim Dickerson, President of the Downtown Business Association, about my ideas for a market; to the downtown business owners for being patient and allowing us to "invade your space", but hopefully with the markets presence we helped attract a few more visitors to your shops; to Mayor Lee and his wife Ann for your faithful support of the vendors and simply stopping by each week to say "hi"; Charles Helms for your guidance and support; Tracy Hammerle of Shear Pawfection and Craft Connection for your patience and ideas; the Dickerson family and the staff at Dickerson Ford for all of your help and patience; Hugh Moore and Jeff Baldridee for the countless Saturday mornings that you helped set up, run errands, fixed things, and so much more; Billy Robinson for building the awesome market sign frame; Stacey's for donating the planters and keeping them filled so beautifully each season; York Parks and Recreation Dept for participating in the Christmas event and for the use of the fencing for the tree lot; Boyd Tire for the use of the storage shed; Fogle's Supply; Cub Scout pack 140, their leader Scott Hart and the parents for decorating the Christmas tree (in the freezing cold); Tony's Restaurant and The Brandon House for supporting our growers and featurng local produce on your menu; Cheney Baltz for your sincere support and promoting the market from the very beginning; Shannon Greene and the staff at the Enquirer-Herald for your continued support and coverage which has been absolutely invaluable to us; to Bob and Dotty Fiorentino for volunteering your time and efforts nearly every week, to the very talented and generous Madai Rodgers for the amazing job in designing our website and keeping it updated, and last but not least, THANK YOU to the dedicated and determined vendors who made the market a reality!

When I think back to that first Saturday in April that we opened and set up with seven vendors, I remember having to remind myself that it takes a while for things to catch on and to grow, and that's exactly what we all sat back and watched happen. Each week a few more new vendors came and "tried us out", and not that we didn't have a light turn out now and then, we began to see familiar faces each week with loyal vendors and customers returning. The goal for the market was and is for it to be a thriving, community gathering place, and I truly feel we have achieved that, and the community has begun to see it's potential.

The market lot will be empty until April, except for the occasional vendor that sets up, but plans for the 2009 season are well under way, so stay tuned for Asa's eggs, Sally's honey, Colleen's soap, Randy's handy work, Drew' and Eddie Robinson's tomatoes, Seth's delightful salesmanship and crops, Barbara's artistry, local and fresh strawberries, corn and so much more. The 2009 market will feature cooking demonstrations by local chefs, live entertainment, seasonal events, a tractor show, monthly yard sales, and your ideas are welcome too. So start planning your garden, making your crafts, and make plans to join us in April.

Holiday Time at the York Downtown Farmers Market!!! Food, Fun, Shopping and a Little Frolicking!!

The following events are sure to get you in the spirit of the Holidays!

An Old Fashioned Christmas Tree Lot at the Market will begin November 28th and will run through Christas Eve! Offering frazier fir trees, wreaths, and roping, and beautiful hand made bows to decorate your home or would make great gifts!
Come warm your hands on the fire and toast some marshmallows. Vendors will have hot chocolate and cider. Santa will stop by to visit with the children on the weekends. We will be posting the hours soon, so make sure you check back!

Kick off the season with us at the York Downtown Farmers Market on December 3rd at 6:30! The Farmers market and the Downtown Business Association are hosting a Community Tree Lighting immediately following the Parade at the market lot. Area church choirs are combining to sing carols and the York Parks and Recreation Department will be providing hot chocolate, cookies and games for the children. Special appearance by Santa! Everyone is invited to make or donate decorations for the tree!

Old Fashioned Fun for the family!!

And on Saturday, December 13th the Market will host a "Moonlight Market" from 5-8PM.
This is during "Christmas In Olde York" Home Tours...take a walk back in time...two of the Downtown buildings are on the tour this year and we are included in their program!!! So all you bakers & crafters out there, this is the perfect time to have baked items, crafts, gift ideas, and decorations at the market!!
A few of everyone's "Favorite Things" to do include: Carriage Rides, Caroling, Hot Chocolate, Cider, Roasting Marshmallows and a visit from the Jolly Old Elf himself …Santa!!!

WE NEED RECIPES!!
Do you have a family recipe that you wish to share?!! How about, Uncle Jo's famous Corn Bread Stuffing? or Aunt Esther's Bread Pudding? We WANT THEM, we NEED THEM :)!! Your recipes will be published in the "First Edition" of "York's Farmer's Market Cookbook".
Barbara Rose, our quilling artist has graciously offered to share
her time and talents to compile them in this, sure to become, an indispensible cookbook!
Please share your favorite recipes (as many as you like) and even your tips on
canning, freezing, "how to's" in preparing produce from your field, and even little poems or folklore.

Please send these to YDFMrecipes@bcdenterprises.net,
or bring them with you to the market. The deadline is Jan 31, but the sooner you submit them sooner she can get started. All recipes must include your name or please give credit to the author.
Barbara will be typing and designing this over the winter months to have
ready for sale when we open next Spring. The cookbook will be a fundraiser for the market and the many improvements and additions we need to make.

The 1st Annual Farmer’s Market Community Yard Sale is the place to find them! The sale will be held Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 8:00AM-2:00PM in downtown York, on N. Congress St. across from the market lot. The sale is open to the public and the community is encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to clean out their attics, garages, and closets and do your part for the environment by recycling your unwanted items. You’ll have the opportunity to shop for and sell treasures. Bargain hunters beware! Vendor space is available for $10. Admission for the public is FREE.
